Michael Melito

Michael Melito’s experience in complex litigation, racketeering and the criminal law field goes back to his service in the United States Army, Judge Advocate General’s Corps. After earning his law degree from Washington College of Law at the American University in Washington, D.C., Mr. Melito was selected to join the United States Army, Judge Advocate General’s Corps. For nearly six and one half years Michael served first as a prosecutor and defense counsel participating in well over one hundred courts martial. After several years as a military prosecutor and legal advisor for the largest corps support command in the United States Army, Captain Melito moved from Fort Bragg, North Carolina to Fort Carson, Colorado. In the summer of 2001 he joined the vaunted United States Army Trial Defense Service and Captain Melito quickly established himself as a confident and skilled court room advocate. As a result of his performance, Michael was one of only ten Army JAGs who earned the honor of attending the Naval JAG school in 2002 to receive death penalty and classified trial training. In his assignment as a defense counsel, Michael defended countless high visibility cases that garnered both national and international media attention. Three years later in June of 2005, Michael left the service of our country to join the Office of the Colorado Attorney General. For nearly two years as the Chief Litigator of the Education Unit, Mr. Melito continued his service to the community and helped advise numerous state educational agencies and spearheaded dozens of cases litigating in federal court, state court and in front of a multitude of state administrative courts and quasi-judicial boards. In the spring of 2007, Michael returned to the criminal law field joining the Criminal Justice Section prosecuting racketeering cases, complex white-collar crimes, tax offenses, drug trafficking rings and environmental crimes. As an organized crimes prosecutor Mr. Melito pursued some of the largest, most complex and highly visible cases in the State of Colorado. On an every day basis, Mr. Melito’s cases cause him to go toe to toe battling a who’s who of Colorado’s Criminal Defense bar. This experience under pressure is what has honed Mr. Melito’s ability to advocate and achieve success. Michael earned numerous awards, including Drug Prosecutor of the Year, for pioneering complex financial approaches in the prosecution and dismantling of large-scale marijuana trafficking rings. Mr. Melito’s case load has brought him into the eyes of both the statewide, national and international media on numerous occasions. Accustomed to high profile cases, Michael brings an attention to detail, teamwork based and success driven attitude to assist his clients. In any representation, Michael brings this pioneering mindset, keen thought and a unique ability to handle the largest and most complex of cases to your representation. In his current practice, Michael specializes in all manner of litigation bringing twenty years of litigation and roughly twelve years of racketeering experience into civil racketeering and complex business litigation. Mr. Melito also has significant experience in high profile matters that are of interest to the public on a state and national level. He is available to serve as counsel for and welcomes all manner of civil and criminal cases requiring litigation and complex problem solving. Michael received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Boston College and a Juris Doctorate from the American University, Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C. Michael is licensed to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit, the United States District Court of Colorado and the State of Colorado.
